John Reddington (Head of Trade Marks)
We are pleased to announce that John Reddington has joined the firm to lead its trade mark practice.  He comes to us from international law firm Jones Day, where he headed the trade marks department for 11 years.

John qualified as a solicitor in 1994, practising mainly as a commercial litigator.  Later that year he joined the UK pharmaceutical company The Wellcome Foundation Limited to train as in-house trade mark advisor.  He stayed with the company after its merger with Glaxo, until joining the City of London law firm Gouldens.  There, he developed the firm’s newly-formed trade mark practice to the point at which, following Gouldens’ merger with Jones Day, it became the firm’s flagship Community trade marks practice, managing substantial International portfolios for UK domestic clients and UK/CTM portfolios for a number of overseas clients.

In addition to all aspects of UK Registry, CTM and WIPO practice, John’s experience includes advising in connection with a number of high profile trade mark infringement and passing off cases (including Glaxo Wellcome  - v - Dowelhurst and others; Interlotto - v Camelot Group plc), and global brand protection strategy.

John is a council member of the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys, a member of PTMG and INTA; he is a past ITMA Examiner, has lectured regularly to ITMA students, and has spoken on trade mark and design issues at the ITMA international meeting.  Before re-inventing himself as a lawyer, John’s career included time spent as a professional musician and founding member of a successful popular music group, a landscape gardener, and a French teacher.

Ian Tollett (Partner) is a British and European Patent Attorney who has taken the relatively unusual step of qualifying as a Trade Mark Attorney by examination.  Indeed, he was the recipient of the Payne-Bennett Memorial Award for the candidate with the highest mark in the Advanced UK Trade Mark Practice paper.  Before entering the profession he studied chemistry at The Queen's College, Oxford , where he also submitted a thesis on the history and philosophy of science.  He has a particular interest in the patenting of chemical polymers, agrochemicals and medical devices, and in the rapidly growing field of trade marks and the Internet.

Ian is active in education in the profession, having given tutorials for the Chartered Institute's Advanced Patent papers.  In the past he has been a keen canoeist and oarsman, but stays on dry land these days, to pursue his interests of cycling, theatre and cinema

Stephen D. Powell (Partner) is a British and European Patent and Trade Mark Attorney. He studied physics at Merton College, Oxford and also has an external law degree from London University. For eight years he was an examiner in the U.K. Patent Office. He has a good command of technical German and French. He has been appointed Vice President of the Licensing Executives Society International.

He is a member of FICPI and also a fellow of the Institute of Physics. He has given I.P. seminars in the U.K., Scandinavia and Japan. Away from the office he is a qualified hockey umpire and coach and is a Vice-President of the Tulse Hill Hockey Club. He is also a local school governor.
